February 27: Ready for the Rain

Yes, we need the rain but we also need the remodel to keep progressing. There better be some work going on under those tarps...

February 24: Beams, Boring Beams...

I know the beams serve an important purpose - and because they are enormous, they probably took a long time to install - but I think we expected to see a little more progress after being away for the last four days.

February 17: Off With the Roof

On President's Day, we (and the rest of the neighborhood) woke up to hearing the roof being pulled off the house. Nice to see a crew working on a holiday.

Here's where the roof is getting piled up...

February 13: We Are Getting Framed!

It's good to see some off the structure finally taking shape. The last couple of days the framing started coming together: the new addition to the kitchen, laundry room and mud room, the pantry, the start of the back dormer, the master closet and the addition to the front bathroom. Here's to hoping they keep the pace up next week...

February 8: The Most Solid Deck in All of San Diego

The footings and retaining walls/planters for the front deck are in...

February 1: Finally, Some Visible Progress Again

The demo went very quick... and then it all started to slow down. There were a few days of absolutely no progress, followed by a week or so of foundation work for the additions. Now they are starting the excavating for the front deck. Nate is helping show how deep the footings were dug... and where the dirt is getting stored.

January 12: Nothing's Changed

The kids don't care that the house has no walls as long as the trampoline still stands.

January 10: Chimney Down

Seeing the chimney go was a tough one... not only because it was one of the favorite parts of our home but also because it looked liked the house my fall down without it there.

Janaury 9: Wait... the outside too?

Right after all the interior walls were removed, they started ripping off the exterior walls. This came as a surprise to us since we assumed that they would just put the new siding over the exterior stucco, but that's not how it is done... so let's throw some chain around a section of wall, anchor it to the hitch of a truck and hit the gas.

January 7: No Turning Back

Call it naive, but we really had no idea that in just one day our house would be ripped apart. The demo started on Tuesday and they wasted no time...

January 5: An Empty House

Once the house was all emptied out, we actually felt like it was perfectly ready to move back into... we hadn't seen it look like this since we first moved in Labor Day weekend 2003.

January 4: Move Day

Ready or not, the movers showed up the morning of January 4. They loaded their truck and coasted the 0.1 miles (literally) down the street to our rental.

Home Sweet Home... for the next six months.

January 1: Back to Work

Our generous friends the Kalla's lent us their enormous truck for a few days (and we ended up keeping it for about 12) for the many trips to the Goodwill and the many, many back and forth trips from the rental to the house... which luckily is only a block down the street. Kristen looked great in the truck... I looked in a constant state of panic when I was behind the wheel.

December 31: Progressive New Year's Eve Party

We took the night of December 31st off from packing. Our night started at the Bali Hai then onto the Kuhlken's - ending the night at our house for some wall writing before midnight.

December 29: And so it begins...

Here are some shots of the house before the packing began. It took us seven days to purge, pack and move 10 years of living out of our house. I don't have any "before" pictures of the garage but trust me... you needed to tether yourself to the something sturdy in the kitchen before you ventured in to find something.
